Dr Kylie Sutherland (She/Her)
Clinical Psychologist
Master of Clinical Psychology/PhD, University of NSW
Kylie has over 20 years’ experience working across public and private inpatient and outpatient mental health settings, including in team leadership positions, with a particular interest in working with PTSD and trauma. She has worked in specialised clinical and research roles focused on trauma, including treatment trials for PTSD with co-occurring alcohol use, and contributed to PTSD treatment manuals and published in this area. Kylie also has extensive experience supporting individuals with psychological adjustment to medical illness and injury, severe anxiety and depressive disorders, addiction, bipolar disorders, OCD, self-harm, and suicidal behaviours, often alongside histories of complex trauma.
In the therapy room, Kylie adapts her approach to what is needed in each session — whether that involves supporting emotional processing, assisting with practical problem-solving, or exploring deeper patterns shaping relationships and sense of self. Underpinning her work is a strong understanding of how trauma and early relational experiences influence emotional life, and she seeks to support change that feels meaningful and sustainable. She finds that schema therapy can be particularly helpful in understanding and shifting recurring patterns of emotion, thought and behaviour that were once protective, but may now cause greater distress or feelings of being ‘stuck’. Kylie has an authentic and a non-judgemental personal stance with a deep desire to truly hear and understand her clients and their difficulties. She has a kind and caring manner, is gently assertive when necessary holding space for both serious moments and humour.

Beyond her work, you might find her tending the garden and communing with the magpies (with varying degrees of horticultural success), sharing food with friends, and unwinding with a good Scandi-Noir.
